Technical Books – Improving Surface Finish

The Brush Research Manufacturing (BRM) website offers free, downloadable technical books that document the surface finishing successes that manufacturers have achieved using our Flex-Hone® tool. Each technical book is available in .pdf format and viewable in your browser.

A Study of Cylinder-Wall Micro-Structure
This 26-page technical book compares the results of cylinder-wall honing with rigid hones vs. BRM’s Flex-Hone® tool. As customers in the U.S., the U.K., and France discovered – and as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) proves – flexible honing produces an optimal plateau finish on engine cylinder walls. Complete with SEM images, A Study of Cylinder-Wall Micro-Structure shows how flexible honing creates a clearly-defined crosshatched pattern with a consistent surface finish through the cylinder bores.

Quality As It Affects Performance
Manufacturing products according to their specifications is a form of “in-house quality control”, explains BRM founder Steve Rands in the overview to this 30-page book. Using SEM images, charts, graphs, and case studies, Quality As It Affects Performance documents the surface finishing successes of the Flex-Hone® tool in automotive applications. Examples include auto parts such as chromed cylinders, piston rings, and intake and exhaust valve stems. SEM photography also exposes how poor surface structure adversely affects product performance.

The Necessity of a Plateaued Cylinder Wall Finish
This 28-page technical book describes how flexible honing reduces oil consumption, lowers blow-by, and extends the life of engine components such as piston rings. By creating a plateau finish on the walls of engine cylinders, BRM’s Flex-Hone® tool can also eliminate seal wear and shearing across cylinder cross holes and ports.  In hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders, plateau finishing is used to deburr and radius cross-hole ports while extended component life, improving performance, and promoting operational safety.
