Earth moving equipment such as bulldozers, excavators, and dump trucks are usually powered by diesel engines and equipped with hydraulic cylinders. Loaders, graders, and other types of engineering vehicles are also diesel-powered and designed with hydraulic systems for moving heavy loads. Surface Finishing for Diesel Engines and Hydraulic Cylinders
Heavy equipment companies like Caterpillar Inc. use the Flex-Hone® tool from Brush Research Manufacturing (BRM) for deglazing, refinishing, and crosshatching cylinder liner walls during diesel engine overhauls. BRM’s Flex-Hone® is also used to improve the surface finish on the walls of hydraulic cylinders, where tight tolerances and smooth surfaces are essential for proper sealing.  Because the Flex-Hone® is self-centering, the tool exerts the same pressure on all sides for a uniform surface finish. The Flex-Hone® is also self-aligning and self-compensating for wear so that even if some of the tool’s abrasive globules become worn, metal surfaces are still finished evenly.
